Merging with Global A Go Go, 9-19-18

Listen to 9-19-18 radio set here

"World service bulletin from the nightshift D.J.
To all wavebands on earth
Reconnoitre on the killahertz"

These opening lines from "Global A Go-Go" by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros provided the inspiration for much of this episode of Merging w/the Night.  I love hosting a radio show at night for the freedom it provides.  And it is much nicer to imagine a connection with other music-lovers all over the world, than to think no one is listening.  Thank you, Joe Strummer and friends, including Bill Lupoletti who hosts a radio show Global A Go Go on WRIR Richmond Independent Radio.  I heard an amazing song on his show and decided to feature it as well - from the Dur-Dur Band from Somalia.

The artwork featured above comes from the cover of Flying Lotus' album Cosmogramma (2010, Warp Records).  The song I played, "Zodiac Shit", has a wonderfully trippy video.

Watch the animated video for Thom Yorke's new song 'suspirium'.

'suspirium' (noun, Latin)  "A sigh or deep breath"

Listen to 9-12-18 radio set

I began this set with 11 of my favorite tracks from this year (in no particular order).  From there, the style cruised from downtempo, to beats, to underground hiphop, to instrumentals.
Some unexpected themes included that many of these songs are on soundtrack-albums, and many feature piano or flute or both.

ANDROID Female Pop radio set, 9-5-18

Listen to 9-5-18 radio set here

A mostly female set came together, despite no plan for a gender-themed show.  Some things just happen.  The new single 'Woman' by Cat Power and Lana Del Rey set the theme, and it was carried on by new music from Anna Calvi, Lou Rebecca, and several others.  I began with Wah!, who I saw perform and teach yoga this past weekend.  She was enlightening.

An exception to the female theme was Egemen Sanli, who I also saw perform music this past weekend.  I could listen to him forever.  He plays sitar, native american flutes, and various other instruments.  His live set also featured lots of recorded birdsong.
I played several tracks from the new album Elemental Trance (pictured) by Egemen and Clare Hedin, whose vocal stylings fit wonderfully into the show.
