3-6-19 Merging w/ the Night, and The NightOwl

(Elizabeth Fraser, pictured)

Stream or download 3-6-19 radio set here

I often try to divide the music I play on the show between the two hours, playing more rock- and pop-friendly songs in the first hour, and the more difficult or experimental songs in the second hour.  Now, I've started calling that second hour by another name: The NightOwl.

My radio show is recorded live as it goes out into the radiowaves from 11pm on Wednesdays (wtju.net or 91.1 FM in the listening area around Charlottesville, VA) until 1am on Thursday.  Merging with the Night has occupied this 2-hour slot bridging across the midnight boundary for a few years now, and it has always been more than a rock show.  We like to push the boundaries of genre.  I'm glad to continue the Merge-y vibe of the show in the first hour.  The NightOwl might make things weirder in the second hour.  But each week is different and the main idea is to give free rein to dreamy sounds.

I hope you enjoy.

Radiohead's Experimental Bent, special artist feature 2-28-19

Stream or download the 1 hr radio set here

The freedom of late-night, independent radio allowed me to profile the experimental bent of Radiohead.
I had originally proposed a Radiohead themed show for this year's Rock Marathon fundraiser on WTJU, along with several other proposals.  But I decided to focus more narrowly on what I like the most about this band, and to do the show in a freer format, and I'm so glad.
Listening to these songs on headphones was a true joy.  The sounds come from all directions; they made me feel like I was in a different space.
