Merging with Global A Go Go, 9-19-18

Listen to 9-19-18 radio set here

"World service bulletin from the nightshift D.J.
To all wavebands on earth
Reconnoitre on the killahertz"

These opening lines from "Global A Go-Go" by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros provided the inspiration for much of this episode of Merging w/the Night.  I love hosting a radio show at night for the freedom it provides.  And it is much nicer to imagine a connection with other music-lovers all over the world, than to think no one is listening.  Thank you, Joe Strummer and friends, including Bill Lupoletti who hosts a radio show Global A Go Go on WRIR Richmond Independent Radio.  I heard an amazing song on his show and decided to feature it as well - from the Dur-Dur Band from Somalia.

The artwork featured above comes from the cover of Flying Lotus' album Cosmogramma (2010, Warp Records).  The song I played, "Zodiac Shit", has a wonderfully trippy video.

ANDROID Female Pop radio set, 9-5-18

Listen to 9-5-18 radio set here

A mostly female set came together, despite no plan for a gender-themed show.  Some things just happen.  The new single 'Woman' by Cat Power and Lana Del Rey set the theme, and it was carried on by new music from Anna Calvi, Lou Rebecca, and several others.  I began with Wah!, who I saw perform and teach yoga this past weekend.  She was enlightening.

An exception to the female theme was Egemen Sanli, who I also saw perform music this past weekend.  I could listen to him forever.  He plays sitar, native american flutes, and various other instruments.  His live set also featured lots of recorded birdsong.
I played several tracks from the new album Elemental Trance (pictured) by Egemen and Clare Hedin, whose vocal stylings fit wonderfully into the show.

ANDROID Reggae / Late Night Set 8-11-18

Listen to 8.11.2018 radio set here

Recorded during the weekend anniversary of last year's communal trauma in Charlottesville. (A reminder about 8.12.2017, the third white supremacist rally around monuments last summer)

The WTJU studios are located next to dorms on the UVA Grounds which currently are housing hundreds (thousands?) of police who came to our city, which pre-emptively declared a state of emergency.  (When I arrived at the studio Wednesday night, I had to park illegally in a sea of state police vehicles that spilled out onto sidewalks and into courtyards.  By now, I'm having regular small talk with an officer guarding the area as I come and go.)

But as of now, it is still unclear if there will be anyone driving to Charlottesville this weekend to show us just how contemptible and ugly their racist/fascist politics are.  The local confederate-sympathizers probably don't want to be publicly associated with last year's debacle or its organizer, and so will stay home.  So, we are wondering if there are any out-of-towners who want to celebrate the atrocity of last year.

Our community is still healing from the emotional damage from last summer.  We have to learn how to accept the past for what it is.  Events related to last summer, but also on a bigger scale, our country seems unable to get past its foundational problems of race and slavery.  We need to learn how to accept what happened, without ignoring the ugly parts.  Here in Charlottesville, we have the special problem of having inherited the moral paradox of the slavemaster of Monticello, a man at the heart of Charlottesville's historical identity.  Jefferson left us with something to explain, and we could start by admitting his influential failures when it comes to racial justice and injustice.

The past is what it is.  We cannot change the past.
Who do we want to be now, and in the future?  How can we help create a better society?

The lyrics of Bob Marley (pictured) point us in a good direction as we confront our society's problems.  The tradition of social criticism in reggae music is an appropriate way to call out injustice without encouraging violence.  We can declare war against oppression without taking up arms, and call out evil and lay it bare.

ANDROID rock set 8-8-18, w/ guest Freddie Jin

Listen to 8-8-18 radio set here

WTJU is an eclectic station featuring rock, jazz, folk, and classical music of many stripes.

Last night, I had the pleasure of having jazz DJ Freddie Jin on the show to play some of his favorite rock sounds including Shoegaze, Japanese New Wave and soundtrack selections.  We shared the set, alternating every 3 or 4 songs, as we "cross-pollinated" between the jazz and rock departments.
You can hear Freddie's jazz show Point of Departure, an exploration of avant-garde, free, and spiritual jazz, on Monday nights 9-11pm on WTJU 91.1 FM Charlottesville.

ANDROID played music from the new album from Mia Doi Todd (pictured).  It's a collaborative soundtrack and score for the new film A Midsummer's Night Dream, which Todd also co-stars in as the Faerie Queen Titania (with Saul Williams, who also appears on the soundtrack, as King Oberon).
I can't say enough good things about this album.  It's going to prove one of the very best of the year.

Artist Feature: Yessirov, guest DJ on Merging w/the Night

Listen to 7.25.18 radio set here

Charlottesville musician Jeff Gregerson records solo work as 'Yessirov', a moniker borrowed from an oft-forgotten character in Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov.  Gregerson also records, tours, and produces music with Wes Swing.
Yessirov has performed at the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, among other venues, and will perform at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar this October 9.

Yessirov served as guest DJ tonight on Merging w/the Night, choosing several from great local artists in Charlottesville  He even read a short passage from the aforementioned Dostoevsky story.  We spoke about his music and our shared love for Portishead's Third album, among other things.

ANDROID late night radio set 7-26-18

    Listen to 7.26.18 radio set

Last week, I played a lengthy pair of tracks from Massive Attack vs Burial.  This week, I followed up with more late night sounds from each of those artists along with others whose music tends towards the dark, atmospheric, melancholic, experimental, and downright trippy.  A trip implies a journey, but you needn't go anywhere.  Here's how google defines 'trippy':

      trip·py
      /ˈtripÄ“/
      adjective informal
resembling or inducing the hallucinatory effect produced by taking a psychedelic drug.
    e.g., "trippy house music"

ANDROID rock set 7-18-18, Merging with the Night

Listen to 7-18-18 radio set here

While hosting again for Merging with the Night, I played a track from Mazzy Star's new EP Still.  Their vocalist Hope Sandoval (pictured) has a great voice.  In fact, I'd say it is one of the best singing voices of all time.
It's exciting to hear new music from this group, although in fact many of the songs  on this EP are old ones that were never produced in the studio or which have now been produced in new versions.
Hope Sandoval's voice is also featured in the Massive Attack vs Burial track I feature in the next show - see the post just below!

    ANDROID late night radio set

Listen to 7-19-18 radio set here

I began this set with a dark atmospheric/ambient track by Massive Attack and Burial, called 'Four Walls'.  It is a Burial remix of a never-released song from Massive Attack.  The track was finally put out (in a limited selection of vinyl only) along with another Burial remix of Paradise Circus, with album art (pictured) from Robert "3D" Del Naja.  Both of these tracks feature vocals and lyrics by Hope Sandoval.  I played both of the tracks, which together are over 24 minutes long.

I also featured Thom Yorke in this set.  Well known as the singer of Radiohead, he has also released solo albums and performed solo as a DJ, where his electronic and experimental side comes to the fore.  Thom Yorke is the anti-hero for a certain generation of us who came of age with Radiohead and followed their experimental phases into wilder territory along with him.

I also played a lot of Daedelus, an LA DJ with a lot of sound.  His music is often layered over by some of the best rap lyrics around, but his instrumental solo and collaborative work is amazing.  Often groovy, it also tends to veer towards experimental territory.

ANDROID rock set: 7-11-2018, Merging with the Night

[Video featuring the song 'Midnight in a Perfect World - Gab Mix' by DJ Shadow with vocals by Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), and visuals from the film Baraka which have been edited to fit the music and words.]

Listen to 7-11-2018 radio set here

I guest-hosted the wonderful radio show Merging with the Night (Wednesday nights 11pm-1am on WTJU Charlottesville).  The show is named after a song from Brian Eno, and I played several of Eno's tracks.

A musical theme in this radio set begins with the 1972 hit 'Summer Breeze' by Seals and Croft, which was covered by the Isley Brothers in 1974, and given a doom metal covering by Type-O-Negative in 1993.  The tune also shows up in DJ Shadow's 'Gab Mix' of his song 'Midnight in a Perfect World.  Check out the amazing video above featuring this song.  (Erratum: On the air, I tried to credit the vocals to Saul Williams.  But it is Blackalicious' Gift of Gab.)

ANDROID radio set 7-9-2018 - The Broadcasting System

    Listen to 7-9-2018 radio set

Today I served as guest-DJ, subbing for Tyler on his show The Broadcasting System
If you've heard his show before, then you know that the music goes all over the place, and beyond any genre constraints.  Accordingly, I made a playlist that is somewhat experimental and genre-defying.  Of course, music that is genre-defying soon becomes genre-defining...

An artist particularly featured in this playlist is Nils Frahm (pictured), a German composer trained in classical piano who experiments with electronic sounds, both under his own name and with his band Nonkeen.  Frahm also frequently collaborates with other musicians, such as Anne Muller who mixes experimental elements with the classical sounds of her cello.

Continuing this theme of classical-meets-electronic, the playlist also includes Aphex Twin, master of electronic beats who also writes amazing classical piano pieces, and a cover of Aphex Twin by the ensemble Alarm Will Sound, who play his busy beats on acoustic and classical instruments.

Another prominent band featured here is The Books, who weave together sampled dialogue with cello, voice, and found sounds.

    I hope you enjoy!

Artist feature: Lobo Marino. ANDROID afternoon radio set: 7-5-2018

    Listen to 7.5.2018 radio set
    (see playlist below)

This radio set features an interview (0:15:55 - 0:59:52) with special guests Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price of the band Lobo Marino from Richmond, VA.  www.lobomarino.com
Lobo Marino plays "Earth Folk" / "Drone Pop" music, which admittedly needs some unpacking but makes sense once you hear their songs.
"Earth Folk" refers to music about nature or even music that aims to speak for nature, i.e., advocate for the interests of our environment.  Laney and Jameson live in a communal setting they call the Earth Folk Collective.
"Drone Pop" is a label that may not apply anywhere else, but accurately describes the mixture of rhythms from Jameson's various percussive instruments (he plays many instruments at a time) with the harmonious drone coming out of Laney's harmonium.
Laney and Jameson spoke at length about their social and environmental activism and how their musical efforts fit into a philosophy of life that emphasizes both self- and social-awareness, and that strives for us to improve as individuals, as a society, and as stewards of the earth.
